Next generation innovation network MCube - Munich Cluster for the Future of Mobility

The next generation innovation network MCube, coordinated by the Technical University of Munich, works together with partners from science, business and society. The goal is to develop and implement a sustainable mobility design in metropolitan regions, such as Munich. MCube aims to enhance the traffic transformation by conducting research and testing results within co-creative real laboratories.

Mobility innovations: Improving the quality of time, space and air

Mobility is a key factor for prosperity, quality of life and sustainability. At the same time, the challenges of our mobility behaviour are becoming increasingly clear: enabling a sustainable traffic turnaround and expanding public transport are just some of the issues shaping the future of the mobility sector. This is where MCube comes in - researching and implementing solutions to the mentioned problems. In doing so, accessibility is improved, the traffic infrastructure is relieved and emissions are avoided. MCube pursues an interplay of three concrete innovation missions: Improving the quality of time, space and air. "Quality of time" refers to the efficiency of the transportation system and ensures the accessibility of everyday places of residence. "Quality of space" describes the impact on public urban space and regional open spaces. "Quality of air" exemplifies the environmental impacts of transportation.

The implementation: interdisciplinarity as the key

The partners of MCube build on a broad and interdisciplinary range of competencies. In addition to conducting research on the implementation of the traffic transformation, MCube is also doing research in the areas of "autonomous driving" and "mobility as a service". Generally, MCube aims to find model-like and scalable solutions that can be co-creatively developed and tested in real laboratories.

Clusters4Future - MCube selected as a next generation innovation network

The idea for MCube was born in 2019 in response to the first call of the BMBF-Clusters4Future competition. In a multi-stage selection process, MCube initially made it into the already funded conception phase in 2020 and was finally selected as one of seven next generation innovation networks in the beginning of 2021. Since November 2021, MCube has been receiving funding for an initial three-year implementation phase.
