Next generation innovation network OTC Rostock - Ocean Technology Campus Rostock

OTC Rostock focuses on new technologies and methods for the sustainable, economic and ecological use of the oceans.

The economic use of the world's oceans will be stronger and more intensive in the years to come than it is today This is quite clear for the participants of the Clusters4Future initiative from Mecklenburg-Pomerania. In this context, the maritime economy provides significant contributions by addressing global problem areas such as energy, food or raw material extraction. Innovative and sustainable solutions are indispensable in order to keep the fragile balance of marine ecosystems. This combination of economic use and sustainability is therefore the declared goal of the cluster OTC Rostock.

From innovative underwater technology to environmental assessment strategies

The cooperation within OTC Rostock is divided into five innovation fields. With the topics autonomous underwater systems, digitalization and DNA-based characterization of marine ecosystems, three fields are dedicated to the development of new technologies. In addition, the cluster addresses sustainable usage of the oceans and the establishment of cluster-wide open innovation structures.

Interaction of marine research, engineering and informatics

Based on a close inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation of marine research, engineering sciences and informatics, the aim of OTC Rostock is to interlink university and applied science as well as entrepreneurial innovation. The interfaces thus created are intended to bundle competencies and expertise from the field of marine research and technology, from basic research to the application of finished products. The location within the Hanseatic and university city at the Baltic Sea also gives OTC Rostock access to an already existing research and development infrastructure as well as established value chains.

Clusters4Future – OTC Rostock selected as a next generation innovation network

The idea for OTC Rostock was born in 2019 in response to the first call of the BMBF-Clusters4Future competition. In a multi-stage selection process, OTC Rostock initially made it into the already funded conception phase in 2020 and was finally selected as one of seven next generation innovation networks in the beginning of 2021. Since October 2021, OTC Rostock has been receiving funding for an initial three-year implementation phase.
