The next generation innovation network "Electrifying Technical Organic Syntheses" (ETOS) aims to establish an interdisciplinary innovation network for scaling up laboratorial practice of electro-organic syntheses to an industrial production. The ultimate goal of the cluster is to establish sustainable electrochemical production of organic materials and chemicals (power-to-chemicals) as a key technology in Germany.

Sustainable electrochemistry throughout the entire value-added chain

ETOS envisions becoming the first major technology platform that bridges organic synthetic chemistry, electrochemical and reaction engineering to generate solutions for robust, sustainable processes and products along the entire value-added chain. ETOS is committed to promote energy and resource efficiency, defossilization of chemical processes and CO2 neutrality in a circular economy.

Exploiting the potential of the region

The lower part of the Upper Rhine and the Rhine-Main region is home to some of the world's leading chemical companies. The academic partnership of ETOS is represented by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU Mainz) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) and the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) along with a non-academic research institution (Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems) complete the know-how within the research field of electrosynthesis.

Clusters4Future – ETOS selected as next generation innovation network

The course for the formation of ETOS was set in November 2020 by the second round of competition Clusters4Future announced by the BMBF. In September 2021, after a multi-stage selection process, ETOS succeeded into the already funded conception phase and was selected in July 2022 as one of seven clusters of the second round of competition. Since April 2023, ETOS is in its first three-year implementation phase.
