Greater Munich is one of the leading biotechnology locations in Germany and Europe. The Munich Biotech Cluster m4 is characterised by a close network of industry and academical research. The 260+ companies active in the biopharmacy sector are, for the most part, small and medium-sized enterprises and, more often than not, spin-offs of the excellent academical institutions in the area: the Max-Planck-Institutes, the Institutes of the two universities of excellence LMU and TUM, the universities’ clinics or the HelmholtzZentrum - German Research Center for Environmental Health.

Innovative medication for tomorrow’s medicine

The region focuses on red biotechnology – i.e. the development of products and technologies for diagnostic and therapeutic medical application.

Within the Munich Biotech Cluster m4, there is a series of new cancer therapies under development, as well as therapies for cardiovascular diseases, infections and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatic arthritis. Some of these projects have already reached market maturity.

Successful in national competitions – ready for international challenges

The winning of the national BioRegio competition 1997 marked the birth of BioM as central cluster management institution for Munich’s biotechnology. It allowed for more efficiency in the founding of companies and the long term establishment of the biotechnology sector in the region. About 150 companies have been founded to this day. The winning of the Leading-Edge Cluster competition 2010, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, led to another forward impulse for the region’s new focus of ‘personalised medicine for innovative, target-oriented medication’, that will assure Munich’s status as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field.

This cluster meets the levels of excellence defined by the European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI) and was awarded with the GOLD-Label.
