Europe's Silicon Valley of Enterprise Software

The Software-Cluster in southwest Germany is Europe's "Silicon Valley of Enterprise Software". In the region around the centers of the software development Darmstadt, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Saarbrücken, over 134,000 employees are working in over 11,000 software companies. The computer science departments and research institutes in the region consistently achieve top positions in international rankings and provide for the next generation of qualified entrepreneurs, employees and researchers. Since 2007, the cluster is being coordinated through a common strategy and structure in order to maintain and further strengthen its competitiveness. Through the four networks, more than 1,500 of the 11,000 software companies in the region are represented in the Software-Cluster-network. The Software-Cluster is coordinated collaboratively by the four regional networks IT FOR WORK e.V. (Darmstadt), Software Technologie Initiative Kaiserslautern e.V. (Kaiserslautern), CyberForum e.V. (Karlsruhe) and the Kompetenzzentrum Informatik Saarland (Saarbrücken).

German Leading-Edge Cluster

Among the objectives of the Software-Cluster are the promotion of research and development, technology transfer and start-ups, branding and international visibility of the cluster and creating new training offerings against the skills shortage in the sector.

As a leading company software cluster, the Software-Cluster continues to maintain and enhance its innovative capability, to expand/develop its technology leadership in cloud-based platform and industry 4.0 solutions. This requires strong technology partnerships with the world’s most successful innovation regions. In the framework of the BMBF-funded project “Software-Cluster Internationalization Strategy for the Completion of Core Competence for Future Issues of the Company Software Industry “ (SCIKE), the Software-Cluster carries out international innovation projects together with Silicon Valley (USA), Singapore and Bahia (Brazil) between 2017 and 2020. These partner regions offer excellent test environments for data-based projects. There, application partners have been found which can provide large, heterogeneous and interesting datasets. Another project of the Software-Cluster is PERMIDES, which aims to increase the innovation capacity of small and medium-sized businesses in the biopharmaceutical sector through joint innovation projects with IT companies – for example with improved access to high-quality customer-specific IT solutions. Already in the year 2010, the Software-Cluster was honored for its efforts in the Top-Clusters-Competition of the federal government.
