GEOkomm: Knowledge – Experience – Ideas

GEOkomm was founded in 2002 as an association of the geo information industry in the region of Berlin/Brandenburg. Reasons for the founding were; the wish of the EADS subsidiary Astrium to find a platform to support their satellite mission Terra SAR-X and to coordinate the, at that time unsatisfactory availability, of geo basic data and geo technical data with the administration. The spatial proximity to the federal government and federal administrations enabled the emergence of a discussion platform.

Shortly thereafter, the corporate network GEOkomm networks e. V. was founded separately on an obligatory basis to facilitate a promoted platform for SME’s of the region.

Today, 10 years later, GEOkomm has “grown up”. Thanks to six years of financial support by the federal state of Brandenburg, an innovative cluster of research institutions and businesses of various IT sectors with national and international members has developed under the umbrella of GEOkomm.
For many years GEOkomm had already been a member of the initiative “Kompetenznetze Deutschland”, the predecessor of “go-cluster.” The participation in numerous trade fairs in Europe, South America, the Arabian Region and Southeast Asia, publications in the worldwide trade press and the accompaniment of politicians to various Asian countries, led to a national awareness of GEOkomm.

Focus of the next ten years will be the by GEOkomm self-defined “innovative cluster stategy.” This includes the development and administration of high innovative networks with members of national research institutions and companies for geo informatics, and adjacent branches. GEOkomm was awarded by the “European Cluster Excellence Initiative” for its already achieved goals concerning the strategy.
